Do You Know what is in Your Garage?

Taking an inventory of the items in your garage may yield some surprising results, especially when you figure the cost to replace it all. You may want to check with your Houston home insurance agent to make sure your policies include enough financial protection.

Aside from automobiles, you may have motorcycles, bicycles, lawnmowers and other yard equipment. You may have an extra refrigerator or freezer, expensive tools, lawn chairs, and sports equipment. It is sometimes amazing what you can fit in your garage over time.

One concern is the storage of containers of gasoline, paint thinner or other flammable liquids in your garage. You may want to consider storing flammable liquids in a storage shed that is detached from your home. Should the liquids ignite and start a fire, you and your family may be safer with the fire starting in a shed away from the main house rather than in a garage that is attached to your house.  

When you purchase a new item that will be stored in your garage, you may want to keep the receipt in the event of a loss. You may one day need to provide evidence of the cost of the item to your Houston home insurance agent or the insurer if you ever need to file a claim.
